Excellent shaver, unconvincedby wet use

4

Over the years I have tried a fair number of electric shavers and have always found myself reverting to a wet shave following disappointment in the results. On reading about the features offered by the Braun 5140; wet or dry, the option to use shaving foam or in the shower I was hopeful that this could finally be the product to keep me from the manual razor. As is typical of a Braun product the shaver is well packaged, although the contents (shaver, charging plug, protective cap, cleaning brush, user manual) were well short of filling the box to capacity. While I feel capable of wielding a shaver straight from the box, I was drawn to the 140 page manual. Something of this size must have some relevant details which may be important and I was keen to find out more about using with shaving foam or in the shower. On closer examination of the manual I soon found that my hope of it containing any useful information had been misplaced. The English language section was just 5 pages long with a further 2 pages at the front illustrating the 5 series range (at least I had plenty of time to determine which of the illustrations were for features on another model as I was not going to have to read all 140 pages). Nowhere in the manual was there any mention of using shaving foam or using in the shower, the shaving tips section even stated “always shave before washing your face”. I was beginning to think this was not the product I had previously read about. The shaver itself feels really comfortable and sturdy in the hand and seems well made. The unit is quick to charge and appears to retain power well. It will obviously depend on how long you use the device, however, I found I was getting at least 2 weeks before I even needed to think about recharging. On first use I kept things simple; basic dry shave with 1 day stubble. Initial impressions were very good, the flexible head was excellent and no matter what the angle it was held the foil seemed to be in constant contact with my face. The results seemed to be impressive with the added bonus of not experiencing the painful shaving rash which I normally suffer. Unfortunately before long I realised that the finish was not as smooth or constant as I had thought and I had missed several spot particularly under the jaw line. Next day, after paying extra attention to the awkward spots I was rewarded with a smooth consistent shave. Next challenge, how would it cope with a few days growth? Once again, providing sufficient time and attention is given the results are excellent, with the shaver powering through with ease. The shaver is easy to clean, simply tap to clear the cassette or run under the tap (it would have been nice if the recommended light machine oil had been included). With shaving foam – I have to confess to being dubious about this, however I sparingly applied some shaving gel and was surprised at how the shaver appeared to not be negatively affected. After a while I noticed that the foam appeared to be clogging the foil and the shaver was not cutting very well. A quick rinse under the tap the foil was clear and the shaver was working again, unfortunately despite attempting to shake the water out of the shaver it was dripping everywhere as I continued to shave. In all I had to rinse the foil three times during the shave and by the end had water, foam etc dripping everywhere. While the shaver may work with foam or when wet, I couldn’t recommend it; it’s much harder to check that you haven’t missed bits then you have to clear up the mess which has been dripping from the shaver. In conclusion, as a basic dry shaver I would highly recommend the Braun 5 series. While it can’t match the closeness of a wet razor, with a little perseverance it produces an excellent close shave even in the awkward spots. Add to that the fact that I’m still to experience any form of shaving rash and I certainly won’t be reverting back to a razor any time soon. As for the wet use or with foam, well while I may not have been impressed the shaver shines without the need of these gimmicks.

Great Braun Budget Shaver

I have been an electric razor user for over a year now after 20+ years of wet shaving. After much research I originally opted for a braun 7 series, simply due to the fact that it came with a cleaning unit in the charger. I was recently introduced to the braun 5140 and though in name it appears to be a lesser model than the 7 series, it most definitely isn't. Firstly it looks good and feels solid in the hand. I first used it for 2 days growth and it handled it no problem (I have a decent growth after 24hrs), I then used it daily for a couple of weeks and only had to charge it once more. I also used it on 4 days growth recently and though it took a bit longer the end result was just as good. The trimmer tool is very useful and the facility to fix the head into a single position helps for the final sweep to make sure you haven't missed anywhere. I would definitely recommend this shaver if you don't need fancy add ons like charger stands and cleaners. I keep this one at work now and use it regularly.

Braun 5140s

I was a bit sceptical about this at first as I have always had a wet shave on my neck and sides and an electric razor for the front as I have never found a razor that can successfully shave the lot without missing bits. When I received the razor I was immediately impressed by the sleekness and build quality, the charge was almost instant and uts still on its first charge after 2 weeks, the first shave was excellent and I only needed this and not the wet shave aswell, its super fast saving me 5 minutes per shave leaving me feeling like I have had a cut throat shave every time, I would recommend Thi to anybody wanting to save time and have a super close shave at the same time.

Redefining a close shave

5

I've led my adult life believing that to get a shave that leaves your skin feeling silky smooth you need to lather up and use a wet shaver and if you wanted a quick shave you'd use a electric razor leaving you with a face that could light a match with. Then I used the Braun series 5 shaver. I now know a silky smooth shave is possible without setting up camp in the bathroom. The battery lasts a long time and I know exactly how much is left in it thanks to the battery display. I can also shave in the shower/bath so those wet shaver people can no longer hold that above our electric heads. All in all colour me impressed.

Braun Series 5 shaver

The Braun Series 5 is a lovely shaver, quick to charge, and halves the time taken by my old shaver to clear facial hair growth. It seems quieter in operation too, and does indeed cover the varied contours of my complexion without missing anything, as per manufacturers claim. I'm very pleased with it, because shaving can be a time consuming chore, and this shaver is quick, smooth and efficient. All in all a comfortable experience, and as such I recommend this product without hesitation.

Silky smooth shave

I love this shaver it really does give you a silky smooth shave with no soreness left afterwards. The adjustable head really helps hug the skin and ensures you get all those awkward little hairs that are often missed by other shavers. The whole feel of the build of this shaver is great, it sits very comfortable in your hand, with a soft touch rubber grip and stylish anodised blue features. The fact that this shaver is also wet and dry makes it perfect for the shower, and means you can wash it after use without fear of damaging it.

The Pros and Cons

4

I was excited to get this shaver open and put it through its paces as soon as it was delivered. When I opened the box I was slightly underwhelmed with the quality of the packaging as I felt it didn’t convey the usual message of Braun quality. When I got inside the box I was also surprised to find that it does not come with any kind of carry case or pouch. Other shavers I have used in the past almost always come with one even if it’s just a simple neoprene one, and so I had a double check to make sure I hadn’t missed anything. I hadn’t. After giving it some juice for a few hours I couldn’t wait to try it out and see how well it would cope with 4 days worth of growth. I was pleasantly surprised as my facial hair was quite long at this point, the shave was very good and very close except there were a few hairs it just wouldn’t pick up even after making sure my skin was stretched as per the guidance from Braun. In the end I shaved them off with a manual razor, although overall it’s a shaver and not a lawn mower and it is recommended on a maximum of 3 days growth. From then on I have been using it every couple of days and I have to say it does what it says on the tin. A close shave with zero irritation and I LOVE the fact it can be used in the shower it so easy to clean afterwards too, simply run it under the hot tap. I also really like the feel of it, it feels solid and just about the right weight with a nice rubberised finish. Overall a great shaver.

Great allround performer

I got this shaver to replace a rotary head shaver that I bought that was very disappointing. No such disappointments with this Braun. It’s sturdily built with a good feel in the hand. Most importantly with an electric shaver, it gives a close shave and has good battery life between charges: The battery charges quickly. I found it takes around 1 hour to fully charge and, shaving most days, I’ve found that a full charge will last for 2 weeks. The shaver has a powerful motor and so copes well with stubble, leaving a smooth feel without any pulls on the face. The shaver has a floating head, which means it moves so that the foil remains at right angles to your face as you move the shaver. The head can also be locked, and I preferred locking the head as I found it gave a closer shave without missing bits. I use an electric shaver most days, but revert to wait shaves if I have a few days growth. The Braun can cope with 2 or 3 days growth without any problem but, as is the case with most electric shavers, there were one or two long hairs that it missed. However, going over these with the long hair trimmer dealt with these. The trimmer seems narrower than others I’ve used in the past, but works well. I was intrigued by the option to wet shave with an electric razor. I always thought as these as alternatives. The pamphlet said using shaving foam with the shaver would smooth the glide over the skin, so I decided to give it a try. And, it did- the glide was slightly better and I felt the resulting shaver was slightly closer. However, it wasn’t as close as a wet shave and wouldn’t be enough to make me use this in preference to a wet shave. Overall, I’m very happy with this shaver and would definitely recommend it to others.

Braun Series 5 5140s

I have been using this now for a few weeks and have now come to the conclusion that this is by far the best electric razor I have had the pleasure of using. Previously I used the top brand standard razor but wanted to try the convenience of an electric one.. My previous experience of these were patchy and ultimately led me back to my wet shave razor. However I am completely converted now by the Braun Series 5 5140s it shaves both smoothly and close. I have tried with both a few days growth and a few hours growth and both result in the same close shave. It really comes into its own in the shower with a wet shave being the most easy and comfortable shave I have experienced. I will no longer be purchasing expensive disposable razors as I have now found my perfect razor in the Braun Series 5 5140s, cant recommend it enough.

Braun Series 5 5140s

Having used a 3 head razor for the past 10 years I was sceptical about trying the Braun 5140s. I’ve used the shaver daily for the past couple of weeks and there is no chance of me returning to my old one. I absolutely love it! The shaver came nicely boxed with a cleaning brush, charging lead and protective cap for when not in use. Instructions were clear, easy to follow and the unit was fully charged within the hour. Much quicker than I’m used to! I suffer from sensitive skin but the Braun gives a smooth and comfortable shave every time. The shaving head adapts and manages to keep contact with the skin even in the most awkward neck areas. It picks up hairs with ease and gives a really close shave that’s comparable to a razor wet shave. There is also a slide out trimmer that I find most useful for styling my side boards or catching longer hairs. The biggest plus point for me is that the shaver is waterproof up to 5m. It gives a really good close shave when I’ve used it in the shower with foam or gel and I find that the skin irritation I have become so used to is no longer an issue when using this product. It pretty much self-cleans itself when I’m showering and if using it dry there is a brush provided or you can simply run it under the tap. The impressive battery lasts me all week without needing a top up charge!
